Submissions
Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.- The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
- The submission file is in Microsoft Word document file format (.doc or .docx)
- A Works Cited is included formatted according to current MLA guidelines.
- Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
- The text is double-spaced; uses Times New Roman 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
- The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
- All identifying information is removed from the document itself to ensure double blind peer review. This includes bylines, last name before page numbers, and document authorship as set up in MS Word.
- Audiovisual work is hosted on a third-party site and a link has been provided.
Critical Articles
Critical articles should be between 2500-3000 words. These articles are expected to be formatted and cited in MLA formatt and will undergo peer-review process. Please include an abstract with your submission.
Reviews
This can include reviews of books, films, art exhibits, public events, food and drink and more. So long as the review connects in some way to the subject of Pivot's 2022 issue. Reviews should be between 700-3000 words.
Poetry
Please submit between 1-3 pages of poetry. Whether the pages consist of one long poem or three seperate poems does not matter so long as the entry fits within the page limits.
Literary Non-Fiction
Works of literary non-fiction should be between 700-3000 words. These can include personal stories, essays, etc.
Fiction/Short Stories
Short stories should be between 700-3000 words.
Video Media
Please submit a proposal of about 300 words (can just write "see attached proposal" for abstract portion of submission). Once you have been notified that your proposal has been approved, you can upload a video up to 10 minutes in length. Videos can include anything from interviews, short documentaries, vlogs, literature readings and acting preformances. Please also include a 1-2 sentence description of the video within the abstract section.
Visual Art
Please submit a digital file with your visual art for inside journal here. Cover art submissions should be sent through a seperate section. We accept photography, graphic design, paintings and drawings, as well as photos of sculpture or preformance art. In the abstract section, please include a short description or statement to accompany your work.
Cover Art
Please submit cover art for the journal's 2022 issue in this section. If your work is not choosen for the cover image, we may still accept it as a visual art piece for within the body of the journal. In the abstract section, please include a short description or statement to accompany your work.
Copyright Notice
Author's Grant of Rights
The author grants to the publisher exclusive first publication rights in the work, and further grants a non-exclusive license for other uses of the work for the duration of its copyright in all languages, throughout the world, in all media.
Furthermore, the author grants to the publisher the right to: a) authorize third parties to reproduce, transmit, and distribute the work for the purposes of assisting with the publication of this work, and b) authorize third parties to exercise those rights necessary to prepare and include the work in research and document delivery services such as those offered by Modern Language Association of America (MLA International Bibliography), EBSCO Publishing (EBSCOhost), etc., or their successors.
The publisher agrees to publish the article in Pivot, a Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies and Thought.
The publisher shall include a notice in the work saying, "Copyright [author's name]. Readers of this article may copy it without the copyright owner's permission, if the author and publisher are acknowledged in the copy and the copy is used for educational, not-for-profit purposes."
Author's Ownership of Copyright
Copyright in the work remains with the author.
Images: Copyright permission for image reproduction is the responsibility of the author.
Warranty of Authorship
The author warrants to the publisher that the article is original and that he/she is the sole author and has the full power to make this agreement. The author indemnifies the publisher against any losses and other expenses, including reasonable attorney's fees, after final judgment of any claim or action against any of all of these warranties.
Further, in agreeing to this Copyright Notice:
1. The author hereby warrants that this article is an original work, has not been published before and is not being considered for publication elsewhere in its final form either in printed or electronic form;
2. The author hereby warrants that they have obtained permission from the copyright holder to reproduce in the Article (in all media including print and electronic form) material not owned by the author, and that the author has acknowledged the source;
3. The author hereby warrants that this Article contains no violation of any existing copyright or other third party right or any material of obscene, indecent, libelous, or otherwise unlawful nature and that to the best of their knowledge this Article does not infringe the rights of others;
4. The author hereby warrants that in the case of a multi-authored Article, they have obtained, in writing, authorization to enter into this Agreement on their behalf and that all co-authors have read and agreed to the terms of this Agreement.

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.
